Open Call For Artists

Deadline for Application: Monday, April 27, 2026 ; 11:59pm EST

Project: 2 Murals in Apex, North Carolina

Summary: The Town of Apex has two mural projects planned; one on retaining walls in the Saunders Street parking lot in downtown Apex and the other on the amphitheater in the Apex Nature Park. Artists are invited to submit proposals for one or both projects.

The murals shall be original works of art specifically designed for the location. In both projects, the selected artist will gather input from a Town of Apex appointed committee assembled for the designated project. Once the artist and committee align on a design, the concept will be posted for public comment. The public comments will be taken into consideration and the finalized design will be presented to the Apex Town Council for final approval prior to the installation of the mural.

Each mural shall be permanently affixed to the surface and use materials suitable to withstand the elements for many years to come. All scaffolding, ladders, etc. (if needed) will be the responsibility of the artist as well as supplies necessary to complete the project and clean-up of the site post installation.

Mural Description / Theme:

Project #1:

The Saunders Street parking lot retaining wall mural covers a large area and is set back from likely viewpoints so small details may not be as critical for this mural as larger images, designs and colors which can be viewable at a distance. The committee representing the Town for this project will include members from the Culture and Arts Advisory Board, Apex Downtown Businesses and other community representatives.

Wall measures to: 205 feet long x ~12 feet tall (at its tallest). The wall has texture as it is a cast-in-place reinforced concrete retaining wall tinted with “cocoa” pigment. The artist should inspect the wall to understand the surface texture they’ll be working with.

Project #2:

The Apex Nature Park (2600 Evan Road) amphitheater mural will wrap around all four sides of the building portion of the amphitheater. The posts and other portions of the amphitheater should not be included. The committee representing the town for this project will include members from the Culture and Arts Advisory Board, Apex Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources employees, and other representatives.

The yellow section in the images is the portion that will have the mural. The dimensions are approximately 13 feet wide on the long sides and 5 feet wide on the short ends. Average height is approximately 12 feet.
