Holiday Collection
The Wake County landfill is closed for the following holidays. If your garbage collection day falls directly on one of these holidays, garbage and recycling collection will be postponed to the following day and the rest of that same week will also be postponed by one day. If the holiday falls on a weekend, your garbage and recycling schedule will not be affected.
- Memorial Day
- July 4th
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
- New Year's Day
For example, Thanksgiving Day always falls on Thursday, so Thursday’s collection would be on Friday and Friday’s collection would be on Saturday.
Call Customer Service at (919) 362-8676 if you are ever in doubt about your correct collection day.
Holiday Garbage & Recycling Tips
- Christmas Trees: Christmas trees are collected and chipped curbside as part of your regular yard waste collection route. Remove all decorations from the tree, including any nails from the stand, and place at the curb for pickup.
- Boxes: Chipboard (like shirt boxes) and corrugated cardboard are accepted, and should be flattened and broken down
- Items Not Accepted: View the Waste Wizard above to search accepted recycling items.
Inclement Weather Collection
If your garbage collection day is disrupted by inclement weather, garbage and recycling collection will be postponed until it can be safely resumed, and any subsequent collection day in that same week will also be postponed.
For example, if your collection day falls on Thursday, and it is not collected due to the weather, Thursday’s collection could occur on Friday and Friday’s collection could occur on Saturday, weather permitting. Because of the range of severity and duration in weather disruptions, it is impossible to predict when a collection route might be eventually completed, as it could occur (in the worst case) several days later.
When there is a weather disruption, we ask that customers put their carts and bins out to the curb on their regular collection day and leave them at the curb until they are eventually collected (unless snow plows are anticipated to come through). Garbage and recycling collection crews will make every effort to resume normal collection as soon as weather permits.
