Invasive Species Removal Workday

Saturday, June 7, 2025

Want to make a meaningful impact on your local environment? Join the Town of Apex and SWANEC (Southern Wake Area Native Ecosystem Conservation group) for an invasive species removal day at Apex Community Park! This is the first in a series of community workdays supporting SWANEC’s mission to restore and protect the native ecosystems of Southern Wake County.

On June 7th, volunteers and the Apex Environmental team will be working in the wooded area along the lake trail, near the park shelters and the "Jäeger" public art sculpture. Please meet at the trail entrance next to the sculpture to get started.

Volunteer Duties & Your Impact:
Volunteers will help manually remove invasive species- such as Japanese stiltgrass, English ivy, and Japanese honeysuckle - from the wooded area near the lake trail entrance. No herbicides will be used; all removal will be done by hand (e.g., pulling vines, digging out roots). Gloves and tools (clippers and shears) will be provided, though you’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Work Environment:
This event will be outdoors, so please be prepared for time in the sun. Water, sunscreen, and bug spray will be provided. Please feel free to bring your own snacks. Bathrooms are available on site.

 Requirements:
Ages 14+. Volunteers under 18 will be prompted to have a parent signature on the waiver and release form. Volunteers under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent and receive approval to volunteer.

Other Instructions:
Please wear comfortable, weather appropriate clothing and closed toed shoes. We recommend that you wear breathable, long-sleeved pants and shirts. Please be aware that poison ivy / oak may be present in the work area. We will provide water, vests, gloves, tools, sunscreen, and bug spray. First aid will be available on site if needed.
