Stormwater

Stormwater

storm drainStormwater is rainwater that runs off impervious surfaces (e.g. rooftops, parking lots, driveways, etc.) as opposed to soaking into the ground.  In developed areas, stormwater typically picks up contaminants like detergents from car washing, motor oil, and fertilizers as it flows. These non-stormwater materials can eventually end up in our creeks and streams.

When left uncontrolled, this water pollution can destroy aquatic and wildlife habitats, and can threaten public health due to the contamination of food, drinking water supplies, and recreational waterways.

Apex currently has over 160 structural stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) to help treat stormwater. Most are installed with development or re-development projects including many residential neighborhoods. Some are installed as part of Town projects. Each BMP is required to be inspected annually to ensure it is operating as designed. The owners, including HOAs, are responsible for all inspections and for the continued operation and maintenance of the BMP.

Section 6.1 of the Town Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) discusses other Town stormwater regulations.
