The Administrative Division contains the Support Services Unit which is comprised of the Community Policing Specialists, School Resource Officers and School Crossing Guards, Professional Standards Unit, and Property and Evidence.
School Resource Officers
The School Resource Officers (SRO) are assigned to Apex High School, Apex Middle School, Lufkin Middle School and Salem Middle School. A full-time school resource officer (SRO) is assigned to Apex High School and a full time officer is assigned to the Middle Schools.
School Resource Officers through education and enforcement and with support from school staff, the students, the parents, the courts, and the community’s social service organizations are able to assist the schools in providing a safe school environment. We strive to hold juveniles responsible for their actions and prevent individual problems from developing into patterns of delinquency.

Community Policing Programs
Community Policing is a collaborative effort between a police department and community that identifies problems of crime and disorder and involves all elements of the community in the search for solutions to these problems. It is founded on close, mutually beneficial ties between police and community members. At the center of community policing are essential and complementary core components:
- Partnerships between the police and the community.
- Problem Solving as a method to identify and solve problems of concern to the community.
The Apex Police Department is dedicated in its commitment to work with neighborhood groups, civic leaders as well as individuals in the continued effort to improve the quality of life for all Apex residents. The Apex Police Department Community Policing Specialist also speaks to community groups on safety, crime prevention and other related topics. They also provide safety and crime prevention talks, child ID’s and community watch information.
Citizens Academy
In an effort to bring new and innovative programs to the citizens of Apex, the Apex Police Department conducts a Citizens Police Academy. The Citizens Police Academy offers members of the community a unique opportunity to become familiar with the operations of the department. During this 12-week course, which meets one evening a week, citizens will talk with representatives of each unit and division in the department, including patrol operations, communications, traffic operations, criminal investigations, youth services, animal control and records. The recruitment and selection process for new officers, accreditation, and crime prevention topics will also be addressed.
In addition to classroom instruction, participants will have the opportunity to ride along with a patrol officer and to observe a live fire exercise with the department’s Special Response Team (SRT). A member of the traffic team will explain how officers evaluate people suspected of driving while impaired.
The citizens Police Academy is not intended to turn class members into certified police officers or reserve officers. Class members will have no police powers. The Citizens Police Academy is open to all adult residents of the Town of Apex. Applicants for the class will undergo a criminal history check. For more information or an application, contact the academy coordinator Sgt. Greg Towell.
Citizens Assisting Police in Apex
Citizens Assisting Police in Apex or CAPA members assists the Apex Police Department without pay in a variety of functions. They do not carry weapons and cannot make arrests. CAPA members help provide assistance at public events and assist the Police Department in support roles at events such as Peak Day, Shred Day, DWI checkpoints and National Night Out. Before becoming CAPA member, a volunteer must successfully complete Apex’s Citizens Police Academy.
Community Programs
The Apex Police Department is involved in programs and events that give back to our community. Our department participates or coordinates events such as Apex Night Out (National Night Out), Fishing with a Cop Summer Camp, Shop with a Cop Christmas Program, Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, Cops vs. Jocks Charity Basketball Game, annual golf tournament for Special Olympics, Youth Enrichment Camp and others. We are proud of our involvement and will continue to do our part to give back to our community.
