Statewide Safety Improvement Programs
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has five main categories covering their safety programs statewide. Under these programs there are opportunities for local governments like Apex to improve the transportation system within town limits providing safety and efficiency for all users. The programs are:
Governor’s Highway Safety Program
This program oversees a variety of safety campaigns and provides funding toward initiatives at the local level. The Apex Police Department may receive funds through this program in the form of grants.
Safe Routes to School
This program provides funding toward projects to improve walking and biking to school. The Town of Apex received funding through a grant to provide materials, educational instruction, and improve pedestrian and bicycle connections to Olive Chapel Elementary School. The Town may receive funds for other elementary and middle schools in the future based on grant opportunities.
Sealed Corridor Program
This program provides funding toward at-grade railroad crossing closures and improvements along the Southeast High Speed Railroad Corridor. Funds may be available in the future but the corridor through Apex is not included in current studies.
Traffic Safety Programs
The Spot Safety Program is used to identify and treat high hazard locations across the state. Spot Safety projects can include signalization, signs, markings and/or geometric improvements to eliminate or reduce certain types of crashes that are shown to be unusually frequent or severe. The most recent completed spot safety project is the traffic signal on Old Apex Road at Laura Duncan Road adjacent to the CSXT railroad tracks. NCDOT has proposed a Spot Safety project for Shepherds Vineyard Drive at US 64 beginning in early 2011 with a citizen’s informational workshop February 1st at 5:00 pm in the CC Jones Community Center. Other projects may be requested as appropriate.
Work Zone Safety Program
This program educates motorists with the intent of improving safety within work zones.
