New Apex Intersection Opens for Travel

July 19, 2011

Apex, NC – Apex motorists will have another option to navigate the center section of town this Friday.  The newest section of the Apex Peakway will open to traffic.

Town Manager Bruce Radford commented, “Completing this portion was a great leap on the part of the Town to finance and construct. This addition will add great value to Apex citizens and visitors as a way to navigate around town.”

Construction on this section of the Peakway began last June, and concludes with a ribbon cutting ceremony planned for this Thursday at noon, at the intersection of N. Salem and Apex Peakway.

The half mile section of road, completed by Barnhill Contracting Company, cost $3.6M to complete.  A large portion of that cost is attributed to a 200ft bridge over CSX Railroad.  The project was completed on schedule and on budget.

“The new traffic signal at the intersection with N. Salem Street will help greatly to improve safety,” said Construction Management Director Kent Jackson.  “The new Peakway section will also help to improve traffic circulation on current nearby routes.”

The Town of Apex’s agreement with CSX to open the new railroad crossing requires the town to simultaneously close the at-grade crossing on Moore Street.

The town plans to immediately begin construction of the 1100 ft. section of Apex Peakway between Laura Duncan road and Old Raleigh Road and plans to have that section open to traffic spring 2012.

The only two remaining gaps in the Peakway loop after this project will be between Tingen Road and Old US 1 and between NC 55 and Center Street. These sections will be constructed as development occurs in those areas and/or as future Town projects.
