Flag to Honor Apex Individuals
June 10, 2011
Apex, NC – For anyone on the lookout for opportunities to honor those who have achieved a milestone, served their country or their community, or fallen in the line of duty, the Town of Apex’s new Donate a Flag program provides one more way to say thanks.
From Memorial Day to Independence Day, then again around Veterans Day, historic Salem Street in downtown Apex is a patriotic row of more than 60 mounted American flags. The flags were last purchased in 2007, and are usually replaced every four years. This year's budget did not include funds for their replacement.
After fielding a request from a citizen to replace weathered-looking flags, Apex Mayor Pro Tem Bryan Gossage saw an opportunity to involve the community. First, Gossage reached out to Apex Herald staff, who agreed to print a list of groups or people who wanted to donate a flag, along with the reason for their donation.
Gossage said he next spoke with veterans groups because they often sponsor soldiers deployed around the globe, and also because he hoped word would get to families who had lost a loved one fighting overseas and who might be interested in making a donation in memoriam.
“This is a special opportunity for residents, veterans groups, students, Scout troops and others to recognize and honor someone who they respect and admire, possibly someone they miss a great deal.” Gossage said.
Boy Scout Troop 131 Unit Commissioner Redge Bodily commended the program, noting “We’re excited to offer parents a way to honor their Eagle Scouts through a flag donation. This effort is just another reason why we love living in Apex, and what the town stands for.”
Those who wish to donate a flag can fill out a short form available at Apex Town Hall, the Halle Cultural Arts Center, the Apex Police Department, and the Apex Community Center. Payment of $35, which covers the cost of a flag, should be attached directly to the form, which can be returned to any of those locations. Forms are also available at www.apexnc.org.
Names of donor and the individual being honored will be listed in both the Apex Herald and on a special page of the Town of Apex website while the flags are displayed.
