Apex Selected for New High School Site

September 21, 2011

Apex, NC – Good news came for Apex with the adoption of the Wake County Public Schools facilities plan.  A new high school will be built in town to serve Apex residents.

“We’re thrilled to hear that Humie Olive Road was selected for the new high school site,” said Apex Mayor Keith Weatherly.  “Our kids who are currently driving out of town to school will have a closer alternative, right here at home.  I certainly commend Chairman Margiotta and the school board for their leadership in bringing this much needed facility to Apex and western Wake County.  Most of our current high schools in Wake County are over capacity and I appreciate the board's willingness to meet the needs of our students in the future."

The 112 acre site, with an estimated construction cost of $59 million, is currently in the preliminary design phase.  It is anticipated to open for the 2015 school year.  This is considered to be a “Large” category school that could accommodate up to 2,200 students.

School Board Chairman Ron Margiotta also expressed his enthusiasm about the plan.  “Savings from the bond referendum have allowed us to plan for additional facilities.  The high school site in Apex will help to alleviate overcrowding in Apex High and Holly Springs High,” he said.

Wake County Schools Superintendent Tony Tata will join Chairman Margiotta and Mayor Weatherly on Thursday, September 22 at 2pm in Apex Town Hall, 73 Hunter Street, to kick off a series of public meetings to discuss the facilities plan.
