Fire TruckFire personnel are assigned to one of three shifts that work 24-hour rotations. Each shift has up to 20 full-time fire personnel, as well as part-time firefighters who work Monday-Friday, 8 am – 5 pm, excluding holidays.

The Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, and Deputy Fire Marshal work a 40-hour work week. We also have a full-time Administrative Specialist and a full-time Staffing Specialist. In addition to the paid personnel, there are also approximately 15 volunteers.

Whether paid or volunteer, our highly qualified, professional personnel are trained in a wide variety of fire, rescue, and EMS specialties. In addition to the usual fire suppression response duties, the Fire Department also responds to a number of other emergency calls. The department currently maintains personnel on each shift certified in the following specialty areas:

  • Confined Space Rescue
  • Hazardous Materials/Radiological Response
  • High Angle Rescue
  • Structural Collapse Rescue
  • Trench Rescue
  • Underwater Rescue/Recovery
  • Vehicle Extrication

All full time members of the Fire Department are certified to the Emergency Medical Technician level. The Fire Department responds with EMS on all life-threatening emergencies.

The Fire Department also sponsors an Explorer Post for individuals between the ages of 14 and 18. These future firefighters participate with the Fire Department in training exercises and play an important support role in emergency situations. The program is a great opportunity for younger citizens to get an early start on learning how to handle emergencies.

The Apex Fire Department also offers an extensive fire prevention/education program. On average, fire personnel make contact with over 4,000 people annually. Station tours are available upon request.

In conjunction with our public education programs, the department participates actively with NC SafeKids and through this program provides car seat inspections every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Station 3. We ask that individuals wishing to have a car seat inspected please call (919) 362-4001 and schedule an appointment.

The department also sponsors a CERT program. This program allows community residents to learn about disaster preparedness, attend training and be prepared to assist their neighbors in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. The program is designed to support community preparedness. Our CERT members also assist with community events such as Peakfest.

If you have questions about the services provided by the department or have interest in becoming a volunteer please contact us at (919) 362-4001.
