Fire Department Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How can I get my child’s car seat inspected?
A: The Fire Department does Child Car Seat inspections only on Saturday. It is best if you call 362-4001 during the week to schedule a time for us to do the inspection. This is to insure that someone is here to inspect your child’s car seat.

Q: Can I burn things inside the city limits of Apex?
A: The only way you are able to burn things in the City Limits of Apex is for a warming fire in the winter or a recreational fire on your property. This would include fire pits and chimneys. The only item that can be burned is natural vegetation. Any processed wood cannot be burned. Processed wood would be 2x4’s, any type of wood that you would use for construction purposes.

Q: Does the Fire Department give tours of the Fire Station?
A: Yes, we do give tours of the Fire Station for groups of kids and individuals. It is best if you call ahead and schedule a time to visit the station if it is a group of kids. This helps ensure that there is someone here that can show you around the station. You can call the Fire Department at 362-4001 to schedule a tour of the station and the trucks.

Q: Does the Fire Department fill swimming pools?
A: No, we are not able to fill swimming pools.

Q: I called the Fire Department and asked if they would send someone out because my smoke detector/carbon monoxide detector, etc. was going off. I just wanted them to take a look at it, and they sent numerous fire trucks to my house, with lights and sirens blaring. Why did they do that?
A: The Fire Department is required to send a certain number of trucks to the scene of any structure-related incident, based on the type of incident. Since we have no way of knowing the exact situation when we are dispatched, we have to assume that there is a fire or other emergency situation until we determine otherwise.

Q: I called the fire station and no one answered the phone. If there’s no one at the station, how do you know when you have an emergency call?
A: The Fire Department does not stay at the station and wait for calls to come in. There are numerous reasons that the Firefighters are not at the station. They may be on another call, training, doing equipment maintenance, or they may be at the station and just unable to answer the phone. All Fire Department personnel have personal pagers, radios, and alarms in the station that alert them to a call. That is why you should always call 9-1-1 when there is an emergency.

Q: My insurance company has asked for the insurance rating for my property. What is that, and where can I find it?
A: The insurance rating is determined by the NC Department of Insurance, State Fire Marshal’s Office. It is based on many factors, including the number of fire stations, fire hydrants, fire personnel, just to name a few. The lower the number, the better the Fire Department’s rating. The Town of Apex is currently rated as a 5. Areas outside the city limits are rated between a 5 and 9. You may call the fire station at 919-362-4001 to find out what your rating is.

Q: My cat is in a tree and won’t come down. Can the Fire Department come and get him?
A: The Fire Department is not able to bring a truck to rescue animals. We suggest placing food on the ground underneath the tree and when the cat gets hungry enough, he will come down. For other animal-related incidents, we suggest contacting Wake County Animal Control at 919-250-1476.

Q: I don’t have power to my house after a storm. Does the Fire Department know when power will be restored?
A: The Fire Department does not have any control over power-related issues. If you have a power outage, please contact the Town’s Electric Department at 919-362- 8166. After normal business hours you can contact Apex Dispatch at their non- emergency number, 919-362-8661.

Q: I’ve seen the green reflective address signs around Town. How do I get one?

Q: I am disabled and in an emergency, I would not be able to get out of my house by myself. Is there anything I can do ahead of time to alert the Fire Department?
A: If you have this situation, please contact the Fire Department, so that they can get this information in our computer system. If there’s ever an emergency at your address, we would be alerted to the fact that there is a disabled resident at that address and make every effort possible to rescue you. We also have forms that are available to be filled out to help us better assist you in case of an emergency. You can contact the Fire Department at 919-362-4001 to get one of the forms.
