Apex Emergency Medical Service (formerly Apex Rescue Squad) is a private not for profit organization which was founded in 1971. The first call was answered on October 1, 1971 at the old Western Wake Hospital which stood on the grounds of the Apex Fire Department Station #3 on Hunter Street.  The original location of the Rescue Squad was at the rear of the old Apex Town Hall which is now the Apex Cultural Arts Building. The first response vehicle was a combination car (Funeral car/Ambulance) which was donated by the Apex Funeral Home. Apex EMS did not purchase an ambulance until the spring of the following year. The original membership was all volunteers, comprised of a group of individuals which possessed foresight and dedication to create an agency which continues to prosper over thirty seven years later.

Today Apex EMS is dedicated to providing paramedic level emergency medical service to the Apex community twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. We are staffed with 12 full-time employees, 12 part-time employees and 8 members. We operate two 911 ambulances with our full-time and part-time employees and members. We no longer perform rescue and extrication duties but are focused on providing pre-hospital emergency care and transportation to the community.

The agency is now based out of a 6,500 square feet station, and boasts a fleet of three ambulances and two special response vehicles. Apex EMS responds to over 4,500 call for service annually and has an annual budget that exceeds $950,000.  Apex EMS is constantly recruiting new members and accepts the support from local service groups such as the Apex Community Auxiliary.

Over the past thirty seven years Apex EMS has been known for its family and community values and strives to keep in touch with those values and the people which it serves.
