Apex Emergency Medical Service (formerly Apex Rescue Squad) is a private not for profit volunteer organization which was founded in 1971. The first call was run on October 1st 1971 and was a one year old child which was running a high fever and had a seizure as a result of the fever. The original location of the Rescue Squad was at the rear of the old Apex Town Hall which is now the Apex Parks and Recreation office. The first response vehicle was a combination car (Hurst/Ambulance) which was donated by the Apex Funeral Home. Apex EMS did not purchase an ambulance until the spring of the following year. The original membership was completely volunteer and was comprised of a group of individuals which possessed foresight and dedication to create an agency which continues to prosper over thirty years later.

Today Apex EMS is one of eight paramedic level services which serve Wake County. Apex EMS now consists of volunteers and paid personnel, both full-time and part-time, which staff two paramedic level ambulances twenty-four hours a day. The agency is now based out of a 6,500 square feet station, and boasts a fleet of three ambulances and two special response vehicles. With a volume of 2,400 plus responses a year and an annual budget of over $600,000, Apex EMS is constantly recruiting new members and accepts the support from local service groups such as the Apex Community Auxiliary.

Over the past thirty years Apex EMS has been known for its family and community values and strives to keep in touch with those values and the people which it serves. Today Apex EMS is a much larger agency than when it began. However, today's membership still understands the importance of family and community.
