Apex Transportation Bond Projects Map (Adobe PDF)
Staff has developed a three point strategy for improving traffic flow, easing congestion and enhancing pedestrian trails. Point one focuses on completing a significant portion of the Apex Peakway (AP numbered projects) to two lanes as a primary alternate route around town for local trips. Point two focuses on upgrading the service level of several key Intersections (IU numbered projects) through street widening, new traffic signals and signal upgrades. Point three focuses on filling in critical gaps in our Sidewalk Network (SW numbered projects) to provide safer and more continuous pedestrian ways.

Description |
Estimated Cost |
Status |
| AP 1: | Apex Peakway: Haddon Hall Connector | $ 2,165,000 |
Complete |
| Extend the Apex Peakway from North Salem Street through to the existing segment that terminates near Hillcrest Road and Haddon Hall Subdivision, approximately 2,100 feet. | |||
| AP 5, AP 6, AP 8: |
Apex Peakway: Southwest Connector | $3,800,000 |
Complete |
| Construct the Apex Peakway from Olive Chapel Road to South Salem Street, approximately 5,800 feet. | |||
| IU 1: | Realign Lufkin Road at Ten-Ten Road | $1,250,000 |
Construction in 2008 |
| The proximity to the US 1 Bridge and the US 1 On/Off Ramp makes the current intersection difficult and unsafe to maneuver, especially at peak hour traffic intervals. This project will realign Lufkin Road to tie in to Ten-Ten Road directly opposite the US 1 On/Off Ramp. A traffic signal will be installed at the new intersection of Lufkin Road and Ten Ten Road. | |||
| IU 2: | Salem Street and NC 55 | $ 250,000 |
Construction Underway |
| This is a high volume intersection at both peak and off-peak hours. This project will improve the level of service and appearance of the intersection by installing additional turn lanes, upgrading the traffic signal, and providing new pedestrian crossings. | |||
| IU 3: | Lake Pine Drive and US 64 | $243,000 |
Construction Underway |
| This is a major intersection which services local as well as regional traffic. This project will improve the level of service of the intersection by installing a right turn lane onto US 64 eastbound and upgrade the traffic signal. It will also add a left turn lane at Old Raleigh Road to improve safety at that location. | |||
| SW 1: | Laura Duncan Road Sidewalk | $ 151,000 |
Complete |
| This project would fill in the sidewalk gaps along Laura Duncan Road which would create a sidewalk connection ultimately from the center of Town to Apex High School . An approximate 2,800 feet of sidewalk is required. | |||
| SW 2: | Olive Chapel Road Sidewalk | $ 246,000 |
Final Phase Under Construction |
| This project will fill in the remaining gaps along the Olive Chapel Road residential corridor and connect those neighborhoods to the business and retail sector near NC 55. This has been an on-going project for three years. However, some of the remaining gaps exceed our normal annual budget capacity. An approximate 2,900 feet of sidewalk is required. | |||
| TOTAL COST OF PHASE I: | $8,105,000 |
