Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

As part of grant programs through NC State University, the North Carolina Solar Center and Advanced Energy, an electric vehicle charging station has been installed in the Saunders Street parking lot across from the Police Station in downtown Apex.

There are three charging spaces in this location, and all are free for general public use.

Eaton DC Quick Charger (1 space)

Connector type:  CHAdeMO
What it can charge:  Tesla vehicles, Nissan LEAF, and Mitsubishi i-MiEV
How long it takes:  The fast charger can charge the vehicles listed above to approximately 80% capacity in about 20-30 minutes (depending on battery size). Take a stroll along the shops of Salem Street while you wait.

GE Level 2 Dual Pedestal Charger (2 spaces)

Connector Type: SAE J1772
What it can charge:
All electric vehicles in North Carolina can charge to the standard Level 2, including the Nissan LEAF, Chevy Spark, Ford Focus EV, Mitsubishi i-MieV, Smart ED, Chevy Volt, Ford C-Max Energi, and Ford Fusion Energi.
How long it takes:  The Level 2 charger will give about 40 miles of charge in 3‐4 hours. Just long enough for a leisurely dinner and shopping on Salem. Depending on the car and driving conditions, a typical PEV is able to drive about 70-100 miles on a full charge. (The typical commuter in the Triangle area drives about 32 miles/day.)

Town Fleet

The Town's vehicle fleet is going green due to support from the NC Solar Center at NC State University, using federal Congestion Mitigation Air Quality funding provided by the NC Department of Transportation. The grant funding allowed us to purchase the following:

  • Three Ford Ranger trucks, which averaged 18 mpg and were used by utility meter readers, were replaced with all-electric Nissan Leafs, averaging 98 mpge.
  • One motor pool vehicle, a 1996 Ford Crown Victoria also averaging 18 mpg, was replaced with a new, plug-in, range-extended hybrid electric Chevrolet Volt.
  • Additionally, the Town will also install two, dual Level II electric vehicle chargers at Town Hall to recharge these new EV/PHEV vehicles.
